Why International Day of Women and Girls in Science is Important
On February 11th we celebrate International Day of Women and Girls in Science. This day is special because it reminds us how important it is for girls and women to be active in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (also known as STEM). Even though progress has been made, many of these fields are still dominated by men. On this day we want to remind everyone that everyone, whether boy or girl, should have equal opportunities to shape the future and realize big ideas.
By celebrating the achievements of women in science, we inspire the next generation to pursue their dreams and show that everyone is capable of learning and discovering new things.
We are looking for 100 cool women and girls in science – who are active today
We didn't want to praise Marie Curie again, or the other one from before that you don't really know. Do you know any living women and girls in science that you think are great? Send us a e-mail or use the form for web links, suggestions and so on. Depending on what you send in, we will publish a book, build a fusion reactor or send out STEM heroine packages. Let yourself be surprised.
Deadline for submission is 11.02.2025
Extended until 01.03.2025 – as part of
the MINTvernetzt annual conference.

Creation of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science
International Day of Women and Girls in Science was established by the United Nations in 2015 to raise awareness of the important role of women in science. In 2016, February 11 was officially recognized as a holiday. On this day, many great events such as workshops, talks and experiments take place to encourage girls to learn more about science and maybe even become scientists themselves. We want girls to see that there are many opportunities for them to immerse themselves in the world of STEM subjects and realize their own ideas.
