Instructions for a rubber band boat

This guide consists of 4 parts.

Scroll down

The hull

1.1.

Choose a form: In TinkerCAD you will find many shapes on the right side. Take a rectangular box and drag it onto the workspace (the blue grid). This box will be the body of your boat.

1.2.

Set the size: You can resize it by clicking and dragging the white corners. Make the boat about 100mm long, 40mm wide and 10mm high (you'll see the dimensions when you select the box).

1.3.

Hollow out the ground: Now let's make the boat lighter. Drag another smaller box into the large box and mark it as a "Hole" (click on "Hole" in the menu bar at the top right). Position the smaller box so that it is just above the ground (leave about 1 mm of space) and group the two boxes. Now your boat is hollow on the inside!

1.4.

Your boat should look like the picture below.

You are welcome to shape your boat according to your own ideas; the instructions continue to work with this basic shape.

The rotor holder

2.1.

Holding device for the rubber band: Draw two cylinders on the back of the boat. These cylinders will later hold the elastic band. Make them about 5 mm high and 3 mm in diameter. Place them evenly on both sides.

Tip: You can change the shape, for example, use oval cylinders to make your design unique.

2.2.

Take a cuboid from the right bar and place it between the rubber band holders.

Tip: You can use the align tool to center the box on the ship.

2.3.

Push the box as a hole through the ship.

Then mark both parts and combine them together. After that, your boat should have a hole, as shown in the next picture.

2.4.

Add a wedge as a hole. Resize it so that it is as wide as the boat's side. The straight end will be at the back of the boat. The length should be approximately the length of the cutout.

2.5.

Combine the holes with the boat. Then pull the rubber band holders down onto the edge of the boat.

Your boat should look something like this picture.

The rotor

3.1.

Place a cuboid in the gap between the boat. The middle of the cuboid should be at the height of the rubber band holders. The end of the cuboid should not touch the boat. The sides of the cuboid should not touch the boat either. There should be a medium-sized gap between the cuboid and the boat.

Tip: You can change the shape, e.g. round the cuboid like in the picture.

3.2.

Mark the placed cuboid. Duplicate the cuboid. Rotate it by 90°. Now your boat should look like the picture.

3.3.

Repeat the process, only turning the new blocks by 45°. Your boat should now look like the picture.

3.4.

Tip: To prevent the rubber band from slipping, you can drill two holes on the sides of the rotor.

Always remember that this guide is just an idea, a suggestion. Feel free to change everything according to your own ideas.
